Separation of immigration goals by visa type in 2024

Canada’s prospects for increasing its immigrant population, by visa type, are:

  • Work visas: about 281,135 immigrants in 2024 and about 301,250 immigrants by 2026
  • Types of family visas: about 114,000 immigrants in 2024 and about 118,000 immigrants by 2026
  • Types of humanitarian visas: about 89,865 immigrants in 2024 and about 80,832 immigrants by 2026

Express Entry and PNP targets will increase

Canada’s outlook for increasing its immigrant population, based on Express Entry and PNP:

  • Express Entry Program: about 110,700 immigrants in 2024 and up to 117,500 immigrants in 2025 and 2026;
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): about 120,000 immigrants in 2024 and another 120,000 immigrants in 2025 and 2026
  • Spouse and children sponsorship program: about 82,000 immigrants in 2024 and up to 84,000 immigrants in 2025 and 2026.
  • Parent, Grandparent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program: About 32,000 immigrants in 2024 and up to 34,000 immigrants in 2025 and 2026.

The Canadian government is looking to stabilize immigration levels

The Canadian government has stated that starting in 2026, it will stabilize permanent residency levels at 500,000 immigrants. It also plans to take steps next year to reset the number of temporary immigrant admissions.
In 2022, Canada will break the record for new immigrants with 437,000 admissions. The goal of accepting permanent residence in 2023 is 465,000 people.

This new strategy, under the title of an immigration system for Canada’s future, has three main goals:

  • Creating a more pleasant experience for newcomers
  • Aligning migration with labor market needs
  • Preparation of a comprehensive and coordinated growth plan
